Abstract
An AISI 430 stainless steel was coated by Mn-Co and Mn-Co-Cu oxides, then tested in O2-5%H2O at 800 °C. The coated samples had reduced rates of oxidation and Cr loss due to Cr-species volatilisation with the higher rates for the Mn-Co-Cu oxide coated steel due to more Cr diffusion to the coating layer. The measured rates of Cr loss were in the order of 10–11 g cm–2 s–1. The graphical representation of the mass flux of Cr loss as a function of water vapour content was proposed to help visualise the volatilisation effect.
