Abstract

Thermal stability of high-temperature piezoelectric (1-x)BiScO 3 -xPbTiO 3 ceramics with the composition near the morphotropic phase boundary (x = 0.64) is investigated by the thermal depoling method. The thermal depoling behavior of tetragonal structured materials has two obvious stages. The reduction of piezoelectric properties well before the Curie temperature results from the thermal instability of 180° domains. When the annealing temperature is near the Curie temperature, the loss of piezoelectric properties mainly results from the thermal instability of 90° domains. Nb doping of BiScO 3 -PbTiO 3 produces a significant reduction in its resistivity to thermal depoling.
