Abstract

We report the preparation of Nb 6Cl 14·8H 2O via Na 4Nb 6Cl 18, which is synthesized in a one-step reduction from NaCl, NbCl 5, and excess niobium metal. Nb 6Br 14·8H 2O is prepared via K 4Nb 6Br 18 from KBr, NbBr 5, and Nb. The reactions are smooth and straightforward and supply the hydrated metal cluster halides in almost quantitative yields.
