Abstract

Two and three ring achiral esters being the derivatives of benzoic or biphenylcarboxylic acid were prepared. Their phase transition temperatures, enthalpies and smectic layer spacing were investigated. The compounds have extremely high clearing temperatures and clearing enthalpies. The layer spacing of the smectic A phase is equal to the molecules length. The synclinic smectic C phase or anticlinic one exhibit small tilts.
