Abstract
Summary form only given. Several schemes for adiabatic pulse compression have been studied to date. Of these, dispersion decreasing fibre has attracted considerable interest. With the availability of the new family of compact and efficient cascaded-Raman fibre lasers pulse compression in fibre Raman amplifiers offers far more flexibility in terms of wavelength and compression factor (which is determined by the pump power) than the methods used before. We report an adiabatic Raman amplifier based pulse source and have used it in combination with a periodically poled KTiOPO/sub 4/ (PPKTP) crystal to generate a high repetition rate pulse train at a wavelength of 769 nm.
