Abstract

A novel red-hot target sputtering system was used to deposit adherent and coherent high purity TiN and ZrN films onto cooled steel components to improve their surface properties. Rotating wear test results indicated that thin layers of these materials can significantly affect the tribological response of mechanical parts and that the presence of a ZrN layer prevents uneven wear.
