Abstract

A new type two-chamber autoclave is described for crystal growth of nitrides or hydrides and P-T-x phase diagram measurements of these compounds under pure conditions. Gas pressures up to 2.5 kbar and T = 1700°C are possible. The internal chamber containing the pure atmosphere is a tungsten crucible of approximately 10 cm3 volume which allows growth of ≅1 cm3 crystals from the melt, flux and vapor. Boron nitride liners can be used to avoid compatibility problems with the tungsten walls. The high pressure in the crucible is supported by the pressure of the contaminated atmosphere of the furnace of an internally heated, specifically designed autoclave. A description is given of the complete pressure system including two autoclaves (one for growth one for purification), a calibrated reservoir (for {itP-T-x} diagrams) and the pressure manifold. Also, the specific advantages of high pressure work for the manipulation of certain reactions and properties of materials are discussed.
