Abstract

High power neutral beams are commonly used for the heating of magnetically confined plasmas in the fusion programme throughout the world. These beams are generated by the acceleration of multi-ampere beams of positive ions extracted from large area ion sources. The paper describes the design of such systems, with special reference to the prototype of the 5 MW long-pulse accelerator being developed for use on the Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak.
