Abstract

In this paper, a novel QVCO applied in 2.4 GHz IoT receiver is proposed. With the current reuse structure, MOSFETs in both VCO open and close at the same period, which saves the power. This QVCO uses bulk-coupled technology, which leads to low phase noise and high phase accuracy. In case this QVCO works in voltage-limited mode, extra NMOS is added as the current source. Additionally, this asymmetrical current reuse VCO core is aided by a symmetrical class-B core. This symmetrical circuit can guarantee a stable start-up and good amplitude balance. The proposed QVCO is simulated in TSMC 0.18 μm CMOS technology. The total area cost is 1.1 mm×0.87 mm. The post-simulation shows that the tuning range is 12.1%, and can cover the whole 2.4 GHz band. The phase noise at 1 MHz offset is −116.81 dBc/Hz and the phase error is 1.03°. It consumes 5.2 mW from 1.8 V supply voltage. And the FoM is −177.254.
