Abstract

A novel single-phase high entropy (Y1/5Yb1/5Lu1/5Eu1/5Er1/5)3Al5O12 with uniform elemental distributions was prepared by hot-pressing and its thermophysical properties were comprehensively characterized in this study. The linear coefficient of thermal expansion is close to that of Al2O3. It has lower thermal conductivity than the single component counterparts Yb3Al5O12 and Y3Al5O12, which is attributed to enhanced phonon scattering due to the increased mass disorder. In particular, the corrosion resistance of (Y1/5Yb1/5Lu1/5Eu1/5Er1/5)3Al5O12 against water vapor is extremely high. The specific weight loss after constant temperature corrosion at 1400 ℃ for 30 h is only 0.2244 mg/cm2. All the results indicate that (Y1/5Ho1/5Er1/5Yb1/5Lu1/5)3Al5O12 is a promising candidate for thermal/environmental barrier coating material of Al2O3/Al2O3 ceramic matrix composite.
