Abstract

High barrier (HB) metallized laminates are combinations of two metallized films, which demonstrate barrier improvements of up. to 100 fold compared with conven tional single layer metallized laminates, or over 1000 times better than their parent unmetallized films. By appropriate choice of materials, from polyolefins to polyesters, a versatile range of flexible laminates can be produced with oxygen permeabilities down to 0.02 cc/metre 2/day (0.001 cc/100 in2/day) and moisture vapor transmission rates (MVTR) down to 0.05 gm/metre2/day (0.01 gm/100 in2 /day). These laminates are being used and/or developed for retail packaging as well as intermediate bulk and bag-in-box packaging for dry foods, liquids and pastes.
