Abstract

This essay considers the phenomenon of recognition between the main character Guillaume and other aristocrats in Guilluame de Palerne in light of the Althusserian theory of ideological subject recognition. The aristocratic characters in the romance understand certain external characteristics as signs of nobility and share an overall belief in aristocratic exceptionality, unaware of the abilities of non-noble characters to identify the signs of nobility.
