Abstract

AbstractThe preparation and characterisation of hexakis(imidazole)nickel(II) formate is described. The compound is unique in the sense that it contains formate anions, that are not coordinated to the metal ion. The crystal lattice of this compound ‐ and the isomorphous CoII and CdII compounds ‐ seems to be stabilized by very strong hydrogen bond interactions between the N‐H group of imidazole and the formate anion.A warning is made against the use of the common dehydrating agent triethyl orthoformate, in the presence of ligands that contain protic groups.
