The vaccine is safe, immunogenic, and highly protective against severe varicella in healthy children and adults and in certain immunocompromised patients.1-3 It was initially hoped that herpes zoster might not occur after immunization. However, Oka vaccine-type varicella-zoster virus can cause latent infection in children with acute lymphocytic leukemia.4,5 We describe herpes zoster caused by vaccine strain varicella-zoster virus in a child.
