Abstract

This paper presents some observations from the 10th General Assembly of ICOMOS held at Colombo, Sri Lanka in July 1993. The role of ICOMOS in the field is summarised, as are brief conclusions from some of the papers presented, as these provide an indication of much current thinking about cultural tourism within the organisation. The General Assembly was also itself an example of cultural tourism, and provided an opportunity to examine the principles outlined by members and ICOMOS itself in practice. Finally some more general points are made about tourism and cultural impacts based on the experience of attendance at the General Assembly itself and a short holiday taken immediately afterwards in Sri Lanka.
