Abstract

THE development of the concepts and principles of population genetics and its application to the field of poultry breeding has resulted in the accumulation of several estimates of heritability and genetic correlations for body weight of chickens. Similar information concerning body weight of turkeys is more limited.Abplanalp and Kosin (1952) estimated the heritability of body weight at 4, 8, 14 and 26 weeks of age for Broad Breasted Bronze and Beltsville Small White turkeys. The estimates were calculated by intraclass correlations and offspring-dam regressions. The highest estimates for Bronze males and females were 71 percent and 39 percent, respectively, at 14 weeks of age. For the Beltsville Small White variety, the highest estimate for males was 33 percent at 8 weeks of age, while for females it was 24 percent at 26 weeks of age. Goodman et al. (1954) calculated heritability estimates for Broad Breasted Bronze and White Holland …
