Abstract

Heredity has been recognized for years as a factor in the development of presenile and senile cataract. The family reported on in this article adds to the weight of evidence in support of this fact. The Loy family, whose genealogical tree is represented by the chart, have all resided in Arkansas in or about Hot Springs. All the members of the family, with the exception of those in the first generation, have been seen by one or by both of us. The cataracts were of the cortical type. Maturity was reached in from six months to three years after they were first noticed. The age of development of cataract has varied from over 70 in the second generation to 27 in the sixth generation. The members of the family in the fifth and sixth generations in whom cataract has not developed have not attained the age of expectancy for
