EpidemiologyHepatitis C affects 180 million people worldwide. It is the first leading indication for a liver transplantation. Natural history. In our country. Natural history of this disease is the development of cirrhosis and an increase of hepatocellular carcinoma risk. Clinical manifestationsIt is an asymptomatic disease, thus when the patient shows some clinical signs, this situation indicates an advanced disease stage, therefore it is very important the encouragement of screening programs. DiagnosisThe first diagnostic tool is the detection of antibodies against HCV and then, the confirmation study must be done demonstrating viral replication. Indication of treatmentThe indication to receive treatment is performed after fibrosis evaluation. New tools for a non-invasive measurement of liver fibrosis and newest ultrasound machines allows for an accurate and quickly disease staging. Direct acting antiviralsNewest direct-acting antivirals incorporated to HCV treatment options have made a great increase in cure rates avoiding the use of interferon and ribavirin.
