Recent data from several sources suggest that the syndrome may be a result of infection with a new human T-cell lymphoma virus (HTLV-III) (1). The relationship between the immune deficiency and the attendant opportunistic infections and neoplasms may lead to fundamental clues about the role of the immune system in health and disease.
