Abstract

Gastrointestinal bleeding is defined as blood loss of an acute nature through the gastrointestinal tract. Its main classification method is according to the location of the bleeding, differentiating between upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) and lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) according to whether its origin is proximal or distal to the ligament of Treitz, respectively. Of them, UGIB is more common; it is responsible for 80% of gastrointestinal bleeding cases. Though the initial treatment measures for both types are the same, this update will focus on management of UGIB, given that in addition to being more frequent, it entails greater morbidity and mortality and hospital load. Lastly, some specific aspects regarding management of LGIB will also be covered.
