Abstract
Photography involves much more than talented individuals producing snatches of reality in some sort of social vacuum. Rather, photographic images are negotiated interpretations of “reality” grounded in particular social and cultural contexts. This essay examines the consumerist and patriarchal ideologies framing the professional photography of formal weddings, and argues that the maintenance of such ideologies stems jointly from producer and consumer.
