Abstract

Basic design principles of ion storage rings are discussed and relevant projects or design studies are briefly reviewed. Special attention is spent to principle limitations for intensity, quality and life-time of stored heavy ion beams. The most limiting effects are space charge forces and large cross sections of heavy ions for scattering, charge changing and ionization. Finally, some new experimental possibilities with stored and cooled ion beams are described.
