Abstract

Lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LiOH·H2O) was easily recovered from the LiNi0.92Co0.07Al0.11O2 cathode by a heat treatment process in a conventional argon (Ar) atmosphere in an eco-friendly manner, without the use of acids. Due to the low oxygen partial pressure (1.0 × 10−5 atm) of Ar, a phase transition of LiNi0.92Co0.07Al0.11O2 cathode from layered structure to rock salt (RS) structure was observed at 800 °C. Further, the observations have shown that LiOH·H2O can be recovered from the waste cathode material when the initial (003) peak area was reduced to 4% of that for the layered cathode material at 800 °C.
