Abstract

Heat capacities of { xC n H 2 n+1 OH + (1 − x)C 7H 16} for n = 1 to 6 at 298.15 K determined by a Picker flow calorimeter are reported. A sharp peak appears in the partial molar heat capacity C p, 1 of the 1-alkanol, and reaches 540 J · K −1 · mol −1 at x < 0.01 for all n from 1 to 6. The limiting values of C p, 1 at x = 0 and x = 1 are linear in n. The excess heat capacities change sign from positive to negative at x < 0.003 for n = 3 to 6. These results are interpreted in terms of self-association of a 1-alkanol.
