Abstract
This paper is an empirical study conducted in one of the International Tribal Development Agencies (ITDAs) ofA ndbra Pradesh. A n attempt is made to analyse the health facilities extended to the nine mandals in the region through the World Bank IPP- VI project. A maiden attempt was also made to train the local tribal women as community health workers (CHWs) so that they might be accepted by the community. The CHWs were trained to provide health education, health prevention and basic curative services at the village level. The CHWs are the linking pins between the community and health personnel. They act as medico-social workers, resolving health problems and building rapport with the community. The Village Tribal Develop ment Agency (VTDA) was constituted to supervise health activities in the area. The VTDA is assisted by both the Village Health Committee (VHC) and the village devel opment fund. The activities are designed to be implemented by the VHC and the vil lage development fund, which in turn works with the people's participation. It is designed to sustain itself even after the government machinery withdraws its training and monitoring mechanism. Community participation is a stepping stone for success in any programme, particularly in a health programme.
