Abstract

Head and neck cancers comprise about 5.5 % of all cancers worldwide. More than 90 % of head and neck malignancies are squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) mainly caused by tobacco and alcohol or by infection with the Human Papilloma Virus type 16 and 18. Multimodality imaging plays a crucial role for the precise assessment of submucosal tumor spread, for the detection of lymph node metastases, distant metastases, as well as second primary tumors.
