Abstract

This study, carried out between June 2007 and September 2009, proposed to identify wild plants and the diverse ways they are used by the local populations of Havran and Burhaniye in the province of Balikesir. The field research involved visits in the towns of Burhaniye and Havran and up to 25 local villages; meetings with 244 local informants; and surveys carried out with 400 primary and junior high school students. Field work yielded nearly 500 plant samples, and around 1200 photographs of these samples. Ethnobotanical uses of 239 plants by 76 families were recorded. These included food (141 taxa), folk medicine (118taxa), handcrafts (46 taxa), decoration (34 taxa), animal food (30 taxa), and fuel (20 taxa). An additional 40 taxa were recorded as serving widely varied uses in such fields as beekeeping, hunting, roof covering, and as sedatives, toys, perfumes, etc. Ethnobotanical information on nine plant taxa was recorded for the first time during studies in the region. Additionally, data on ten species of mushrooms sold in local farmers' markets for food consumption were collected and recorded.
