Abstract

Abstract Single-parent families represent one of the most significantly increasing family forms. This paper reviews the issues, family therapy systems, and techniques that are specific to single-parent family therapy. The most frequently cited reason for single-parent families seeking therapy is a problem of maladjustment for one or more of the children. Structural family therapy is the strategy most often utilized with the single-parent family. Specific therapeutic techniques and implications for practice are also described. Coordinating family systems theory with schools of family therapy and distinctive techniques applicable to the single-parent family are urged.
