Abstract

A prototype harvester was designed and constructed for harvesting eastern thornless blackberries grown on “T”, “V”, and “Y” trellises. The shaker could be hydraulically repositioned in the field to accommodate all three trellis systems. “T”, “V”, and “Y” shaped trellises were constructed, installed, and trained with canes from three cultivars. Preliminary field testing on ‘Thornfree’ showed that about 90% of the mature berries could be harvested using a shaking frequency of 5 Hz, ground speed of 1 km/h (0.6 mph), and a harvest interval of three times per week. All three trellis systems could be mechanically harvested.
