Abstract

The Hartree-Fock method is used to study the doubly even N = Z nuclei in the 2s-1d shell. Basis functions with correct asymptotic behavior are generated by use of a Wood-Saxon well. The results are compared with calculations using the conventional harmonic oscillator basis. It is found that most of the Wood-Saxon results may be reproduced with a harmonic oscillator basis if the oscillator parameter is carefully chosen.
