Abstract

1. Of all investigated melts the lowest hardenability was observed in steel produced by the “Dneprospetsstal'” and “Elektrostal'” plants. Melts with lowered hardenability are also produced by the Izhevsk, Chelyabinsk, “Dneprospetsstal',” 'Elektrostal'” and Slatoust plants. 2. The character of the distribution of the carbide phase as conditioned by annealing techniques has a marked effect on the hardenability of hypereutectoid annealed steel. 3. With the given chemical composition, the stability of austenite in ShKh15 steel is determined by the character of distribution of the carbide phase. 4. Hardenability is not lowered by increasing the amounts of aluminum in ShKh15 steel for the purpose of deoxidation from 0. 220 to 1 kg/t.
