Abstract

As the first part of the title of this column implies, 2022 is the 70th anniversary of the founding of the MTT Society, so from all of us at IEEE Microwave Magazine</i> , “Happy 70th anniversary, MTT-S!” The second part of the title, “A Two for One Issue,” means that we are not only celebrating the MTT-S’s 70th anniversary, but we also have an extra treat with a series of technical focus articles from the MTT Technical Committee on Microwave Control Techniques (TC-13). This month’s issue is broadly divided into two parts, with the first part containing our regular columns and the TC-13 focus issue technical features, and the second part containing a series of columns highlighting the work of some of the MTT-S Administrative Committee (AdCom) efforts. The TC-13 technical focus articles and the work of TC-13 are highlighted in the guest editorial, and I recommend that you start your technical reading there. I would like to thank Guest Editor Chris Nordquist for working with IEEE Microwave Magazine</i> ’s editorial staff and the technical feature authors to bring this focused series of technical articles to publication. In the guest editorial, you will find a little bit of history about TC-13, as well as summaries of the technical features. The 70th anniversary portion of the issue highlights the following MTT-S AdCom committees: Awards; Education; Inter-Society; Marketing and Communications; Meetings and Symposia; Nominations and Appointments; Publications; and the Technical Coordinating and Future Directions Committee (TCFDC). There is also an article from the MTT-S Historian, as well as a listing of those microwave engineers who have been members of the MTT-S for 50 years or more. By far, the longest article in this 70th anniversary section is the TCFDC article. Earlier this year, Ke Wu, a former MTT-S president, called a series of ad hoc meetings to develop ideas to help MTT-S celebrate its 70th anniversary. For example, the commemorative 70th anniversary coin that attendees at IMS2022 received was one such idea. Another idea from the 70th anniversary group was to update IEEE Microwave Magazine</i> ’s 2016 AdCom committee overview and also to task each of the technical committees to write short articles in each of their respective technical areas to provide a five-year vision of the direction their technologies are headed. Valentina Palazzi and Dominique Schreurs, TCFDC coordinator and TCFDC chairperson, respectively, worked diligently with the individual TC coordinators during the first and second quarter of 2022 to put together this exciting look at the near-term future of microwave theory and technology. I greatly appreciate their efforts. Many of the TC articles were written by the respective TC’s affiliate and/or young professional members alongside more experienced members of the TC. All of the articles provide in-depth looks of the various AdCom committees‘ roles, and I highly recommend reading them.
