Abstract
Haploids are autonomous, sporophytic plants that have gametophytic chromosome number because they originate from a gametic cell in the embryo sac or in the pollen grain. The haploid embryo can arise from an egg cell (gynogenesis) or from a gametophytic cell other than the egg cell (apogamy) or a male gamete (androgenesis). It can also originate from the microspore nucleus before first pollen grain mitosis when pollen or anthers are cultured in vitro.
