Abstract
Drs. Prolla and Kirsner have produced a valuable how monograph on gastrointestinal exfoliative cytology. The work is based mostly on the experience of the gastrointestinal cytology laboratory at the University of Chicago between April 1955 and December 1968. They do not present the data from the first five years of the existence of this laboratory, even though the earlier results were better than those they describe. Included is a comprehensive review of the world literature on gastrointestinal cytology and an adequate, but somewhat selected bibliography (307 references), which should enable those interested in the subject to pursue it further. A wide range of data on the gastrointestinal tract is discussed, from the esophagus to the anus. The cell collection techniques that have been used are mentioned and are also cited in the bibliography. There are some misquotations or misinterpretations. An example of an incorrect statement occurs on page 12:
