Abstract

In a lecture at Beijing University in commemoration of Pan Guangdan [Quentin Pan], Professor Li Yiyuan gave a penetrating exposition of the northern and southern schools of Chinese anthropology and the interchange between them, saying that they characterized Chinese schools of thought in anthropology.1 The author believes there are two other major schools of thought in Chinese anthropological research. One is the school whose research into village society in northern China is based on the data gathered in the South Manchurian Railway (SMR) Company's Investigation of Customs in Chinese Villages (hereafter referred to as Investigation). The other is the Maurice Freedman-influenced school that examines lineage theory in rural southern China.
