Abstract

Halloysite nanotubes (HNT) are naturally occurring nanostructures that have been in several applications, like drug delivery and cancer therapy. These hollow tubular structures are eco-friendly and biocompatible. HNT were functionalized with the organosilane trimethoxy(propyl)silane (TMPS) and a fluorophore. Their biocompatibility was assessed by viability, cytotoxicity and cell-death mechanism as well as cell proliferation tests performed on C6 rat glioblastoma cells incubated in the presence of the functionalized HNT to different concentrations (0.005 mg/mL, 0.05 mg/mL, and 0.5 mg/mL) for 24, 48, and 72 h. Results showed that TMPS-HNT were not cytotoxic for this cellular line under in vitro conditions.
