Introduction

31: President of the Family Division, Sir James Munby, delivers a judgment raising serious concerns about the impact of legal aid cuts on the vulnerable. ‘...it is unthinkable that parents should have to face the local authority’s application without proper representation. The case began when De Freitas, a 23-year-old woman, reported an alleged rape to the police in January 2013. After investigating the incident and interviewing her and the alleged perpetrator, the police told her they could not proceed with the case as there was not a realistic chance of a successful conviction.
