Abstract
Recent hailstorms in New South Wales, Australia, have focussed attention on the design, maintenance, repair and replacement of roofing systems. Hailstorms in North America are the main cause of failure of roofing systems. Whereas brittle roofing systems are widely used in Australia, commonly used roofing systems in North America are built up roofing systems. A first stage in addressing appropriate roofing systems for damage minimisation due to hail storms is to review experience elsewhere: in North America. The failure of roofing membranes from heat stress in Saudi Arabia and North America is also reviewed. The focus of this paper is on the development of guidelines for service life of flat and low pitch roofing systems.
