Abstract

The paper describes the type of roofing and drainage systems used in flat roofs of villas in the hot-dry climate of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Although the climate of Riyadh is classified as dry (with annual rainfall <250mm), however, a whole month's rain may sometimes fall in few days in a short period. Various roofing and drainage systems are used in flat roofs, with some alternative versions, some of which are developed from traditional systems and local experience. This poses some problems since such practice may lead to the use of undurable material (jute) or/and inferior detailing. Therefore, more attention and care must be given to the design and selection of roofing and drainage systems and use of proper details, which comply with known standards and approved codes.
