Abstract
1. 1.Protohaem pigment was identified by spectral analysis and TLC in engorged female Dermacentor andersoni haemolymph (0.46 μg. per μl.) and homogenate (3.7 mg. per tick), and in the egg (0.36 μg. per mg.). 2. 2. D. andersoni is capable of de novo haem synthesis as shown by in vivo incorporation of 14C of α-carbon from glycine and carbon 4 and 5 of δ-aminolaevulic acid. 3. 3.The succinate-glycine cycle operating in D. andersoni is shown by the transfer of carbon 5 of δ-aminolaevulic acid to ureido groups of guanine, and by the decarboxylation of carbon 4 of δ-aminolaevulic acid. 4. 4.The haem contents of the homogenate increased after injecting δ-aminolaevulic acid; thus δ-aminolaevulic acid apparently has a regulatory role in haem synthesis. 5. 5.Glycine carboxylic carbon incorporation in haem is explained by the glyoxylate cycle.
