Abstract

Hadong Hanok Stay is a hanok (traditional Korean house) guest accommodation at the foot of Mount Jirisan, from where you can see the river Seomjingang and the plain of Pyeongsari far to the south. The Stay village consists of four accommodation units of three types: anchae, sarangchae, and byeolchae. Anchae and sarangchae have "horizontal narratives". The various spaces and scenery unfold on a horizontal plane. The byeolchae was planned as a "vertical narrative", with a simple room and a floor over the kitchen. A reception was also provided to cater for guests’ needs. This is a "hybrid" blend of traditional Korean structures and modern wooden ones – a new form of hanok that suits modern lifestyles and construction techniques as well as the graceful scenery of Hadong.
