Abstract

This paper summarizes our recent investigations on habitat requirements for juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta) in small tributaries of a lowland river system, the Scorff River (Brittany, France). Preferences for water velocity, depth, substrate and shelter, temporal variations in habitat use, and effects of predation and intra-specific competition on habitat choice, were studied both at field and laboratory. Using results from the literature, we propose a synthesis of the diel and seasonal shifts in habitat use by juvenile brown trout, Bull. Fr. Peche Piscic. (2002) 365/366 : 435-454 — 435 —
