Abstract

Recent progress on a number of gyrotron development projects at Varian Associates will be summarized. On one project pulsed output of 100 kW has been obtained at 140 GHz with TE 03 mode output. The same device has produced 100 kW at 160 GHz with the TE 62 mode. Recent experience operating 200 kW oscillators at 60 and 70 GHz with pulse lengths of several seconds will be discussed. This long pulse operation requires heater compensation to maintain constant beam current from the temperature limited cathodes. Recent computer simulations of gyrotron guns will be presented. These exhibit some interesting space charge effects which become particularly important in megawatt level beams.
