Abstract

We reported the first observation of sideband mode competition in a gyrotron with an overmoded open waveguide resonator. Further experiments were conducted in a gyrotron operating in the TE16,2 mode at 146 GHz. A pair of sidebands was excited corresponding to the TE15,2 and TE17,2 modes offset by +5 GHz. A multirnode, multifrequency, self-consistent time-dependent code predicts the excitation of the sidebands with good accuracy. A new cavity with a higher Q was designed to eliminate the sidebands. Tests with this cavity found no detectable sideband power. Up to 1.3 MW of power was generated in 3 ,us pulses at 80 kV beam voltage and 40 A beam current.
