Abstract

The properties of guiding modes of a slab waveguide composed of impedance-matched epsiv (permittivity) negative and mu (permeability) negative media were investigated. This special type of waveguide supports only a single mode having polarization degeneracy: transverse-electric (TE)- and transverse-magnetic (TM)-polarized light waves always have the same propagation wavevectors. However, the overall power flow directions of these degenerate TE and TM modes are always opposite to each other.
