Abstract

Recent extreme weather events have caused significant damage to power system infrastructure and resulted in unpredicted load interruptions from a few hours to several weeks. Despite the low probability of occurrence, the high impact of these events necessitates the study of power system resilience where effective models and algorithms are required to predict the event and likelihood of component failures, respond by utilizing new technologies, and recover by timely outage management and restoration processes. This issue aims at addressing the challenges and opportunities in deployment of smart grid technologies to achieve a resilient power system which would predict, respond, and quickly recover from extreme weather events and accordingly guarantee minimum customer interruption. Through a careful peer review process, 18 papers representing diverse topics on power grid resilience are included in this special section. Based on the various aspects of contributions, these papers are categorized and summarized in the following.
