Abstract
Agglutination of Rhizobium with pea lectin (PL) was restricted to pea nodulating strains and only occurred during a short period after exponential growth had stopped. Binding of PL to Rhizobium was observed with several species and was not restricted to a particular growth phase. Hot saline extraction of the cells removed their light microscope visible capsule and their PL binding capacities (Van der Schaal et al. 1983). We have developed an enzyme-linked lectin binding assay (ELBA) to be able to quantitate PL receptors in these extracts and in extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) of Rhizobium.
