Abstract

Abstract An enzyme linked lectin binding assay for the quantitative detection of carbohydrate receptors on living cell membranes is exemplified here with mannose/glucose specific lectins. Mosquito, tick and hepatoma cells from cell cultures were exposed to biotinylated concanavalin A, Pisum sativum and Lens culinaris agglutinins in a range of concentrations. The concentrations of cells and lectins were found to be crucial with this assay. Mannose receptors were detected in all the cell lines tested using a 5 pg/ml lectin dilution and 2 x lo6 cells/ml; but diEferences up to 50% were found between the different cell lines assayed.
