Abstract

AN UNIDENTIFIED growth factor in dried whey which has been termed the “whey factor” has been reported by Berry et al. (1943), Hill et al. (1944), Hill (1948) and Reed et al. (1951). Other work on unidentified growth factors required by the chick and poult (Carlson et al., 1949; Heuser and Norris, 1951; Couch et al., 1952; Fuller et al., 1952; and Sunde et al., 1952) has established the presence of a growth factor or factors in fish meal and fish solubles which has been designated as the “fish factor.” The existence of different factors in dried whey and fish products which are additive in the effect on growth has been reported by Couch et al. (1952) and Camp et al. (1955). Menge and associates (1952) reported the need for two distinct unidentified growth factors in the diet of the chick.
