Abstract
Magnesia whiskers were grown by two different methods, namely (1) oxidation of magnesium vapor with water vapor and (2) hydrolysis of magnesium chloride vapor. The influence of the starting materials on the morphology of the crystals and the growth process were studied. The results suggest that in method (1) impurities present at the tips of whiskers took part in their leader growth and in method (2) the whiskers crystallized from a liquid phase.
